NASCAR overhauled its points system for 2026. A race win is now worth 55 points, a 20-point premium over the 35 points awarded for 2nd place. From there, points decrease by exactly one per position down to 2 points for 35th, before leveling off at a flat 1 point for every finisher from 36th through 40th.
Stage points: bonuses inside the race itself
Every Cup Series race is divided into three stages, with the top 10 drivers at the end of each of the first two stages earning bonus stage points on a 10-down-to-1 scale — completely separate from, and added on top of, whatever a driver eventually scores from their final race position.
The fastest-lap bonus point
2026 also introduced a single bonus point for whichever driver records the fastest lap of the race, regardless of where they finish — a small addition, but one that can occasionally matter at the margins of a tight points battle.

Why 'playoff points' no longer exist
Under the previous system, race wins and stage wins earned separate "playoff points" that carried forward as a head start once the postseason began. That mechanism is gone entirely for 2026 — the Chase now re-seeds the 16 qualifiers just once, at the end of the regular season, based purely on regular-season points standing rather than accumulated playoff points from individual wins.
How these points actually decide the championship
